Both the town and village of Orchard Park are in the process of gathering support to obtain grant funding to further develop the trail system within Yates Park.

An informational meeting seeking community feedback was held before the start of the July 5 Town Board meeting. No residents spoke on the matter during the meeting.

The trail project includes some replacement and repair work on existing trails, while connecting trails along the Green Lake dam area, Little League diamonds all the way down Thorn Avenue, and into some of the local village areas, according to Town Engineer Wayne Bieler.

There would also be park benches and trash receptacles added to the trails through the project.

“We’re applying for a grant, and by working with the village and the town, there’s a good chance we can get grant money,” said Town Supervisor Patrick Keem.

The two municipalities would be applying for the grant with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Mayor Jo Ann Litwin Clinton sees this project as a way to enhance walkability in Orchard Park.

“We’re trying to make our town and village more walkable and user-friendly,” Litwin Clinton said.

At the end of the informational meeting, 25 residents signed a document supporting the further development of the trails.

A full plan of the trails project is available for view in the Engineering Department.
